Situated just a stone’s throw from St Paul’s Cathedral at 11 Pilgrim Street, The Carter saw the full refurbishment and extension of a 1990s purpose-built office block. The unassuming building was earmarked for redevelopment by the client, who was keen to make the space attractive, inclusive and accessible to a broad range of potential occupiers.

The refurbishment comprised the complete remodelling of the ground floor reception and entrance, the infill of an existing atrium to accommodate and extension on the seventh floor, new terraces on upper floors, and new lifts, WCs and shower facilities across the building.

Our structural design re-uses as much of the existing structure as possible; the new rooftop extension employs an exposed steel frame with engineered timber infill joists and panels, which limits the weight applied to the existing structure and avoids the need for any strengthening works. The exposed timber in the roof acts as both a structural element and a natural finish, minimising material use as much as possible.

The result is an inclusive and future-proofed workspace that maximises lettable floor area for the client, and aligns to the UK’s Net Zero 2050 ambitions.
