Roundtable: Getting started with embodied carbon
How can architects reduce the embodied carbon in the buildings they design? A panel of industry experts hosted by the AJ shared top tips at the Roca London Gallery.
Webb Yates associate, Anna Beckett explained that significant savings can be made in small projects, such as terraced house extensions, by substituting timber for steel.
Beckett also stressed the crucial importance of early contractor engagement due to ‘the contractor’s massive impact on the carbon of a project’. Careful low-carbon specification based on thorough review of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) can be easily undermined if a contractor swaps products out or sources them from further away.
