Not one, but two award wins in this year’s Wood Awards 2020 including both main categories of ‘Gold Award & Private Award’ for the sustainably stunning ‘The Rye’ with Tikari Works and ‘Small Projects Award’ for the low-carbon and powerful ‘Wooden Roof’ with Tsuruta Architects.

The Rye is a collection of ten thoughtfully conceived homes set over two buildings situated in the heart of Peckham. The innovative scheme comprises a solid timber superstructure, formed primarily from CLT, and warm spruce cladding, with a facade of 10,000 handmade clay shingles to embed the buildings into their red brick Victorian context. A focus on sustainability and low impact construction informs the entire scheme and the two buildings are unified through their rooflines and material qualities. Read the full case study of The Rye.

Wooden Roof, built for an existing Grade II listed terrace property, sits in a north-facing garden. The new conservatory is clad in planks of charred wood and sunk within the garden to ensure that it sits below the existing adjacent boundary wall shared with the neighbour. One solid piece of wood, enclosed by four seasons glazing units, forms the entire structure and acts the building's envelope, structure, insulation, and cladding.

Our team has been at the forefront of championing the use of low-carbon natural materials like timber for use in ever larger and more ambitious projects. Striving to meet the needs of our society without breaching planetary boundaries, is an essential foundation of our work.

Wood Awards aim to recognise, encourage and promote outstanding design, craftsmanship and installation using wood.
