We are thrilled to announce that Wooden Roof is one of the six small-scale projects that's competing for this year’s Stephen Lawrence Prize.

Wooden Roof is a new conservatory and part of a Grade II listed end of terrace property situated in the heart of Islington. Designed by Tsuruta Architects, Wooden Roof has already been recognised with a 2021 RIBA National Award, and awarded the 2021 RIBA London Small Project of the Year.

"Clear constraints imposed by its grade II listing — limits on the overall height and the need to remain subservient to the main building — has prompted a bespoke contemporary solution that utilizes digital manufacturing techniques. The result is a uniquely crafted timber structure that draws on valuable lessons from traditional Japanese joinery," says the jury.

The winner of the Stephen Lawrence Prize 2021, which is named after the aspiring architect killed in a racially motivated attack in 1993, will be announced on Thursday 14 October alongside the Stirling Prize at a ceremony at Coventry Cathedral.
