Egg House is a new home for the owner of London-based fashion boutique, Egg. Part of a wider redevelopment of a series of Knightsbridge mews houses for the boutique, Egg House combines flexible living space with back-of-house facilities for the adjacent shop.
The existing two-storey mews building was opened up, with the ceiling joists removed to increase the height of the first-floor space. Within this space, timber joists and load-bearing stud walls support a new mezzanine floor and form timber ‘boxes’ that conceal the home’s domestic and commercial functions.
Access to the mezzanine level is via a timber staircase made up of a series of planks suspended above the hallway. Large new skylights maximise natural light and small openings in the mezzanine level create views and light through to the lower levels.
