This project involved the refurbishment of an existing shop unit in a 1920s concrete framed building north of London's oxford street. The principal changes to the existing structure were the forming of a large opening in the existing concrete floor ground floor to allow light and communication between the shop at ground level and the basement area. A new staircase was designed. The client wished the design of the stair case to reflect an original design by Arne Jacobsen for the National Bank of Denmark. Where the original design featured suspension cables for the landing sections, this stair cantilevers from its supports. Great case was taken to conceal bolted connections by forming halving joints in the connections with drilled and tapped fixings.
