As part of reconfiguration works taking place at Gatwick Airport's North Terminal, passenger circulation routes through the new retail space were being modified. Access to the pier link bridges at a lower level was no longer required and therefore a 19m diameter void within the International Departures Lounge was being infilled.
The new structure presented a number of challenges as it needed to be supported completely by the existing structure, without affecting the baggage hall at ground floor level, and also have an extremely limited impact on the operation of the IDL during construction.
Webb Yates Engineer, working with the contractor, produced the design for the infill structure which incorporated temporary works into the permanent works wherever possible and that could easily be constructed within the constraints of the site.
