Webb Yates Engineers was responsible for the design of an unusual post-tensioned stone staircase.
The 16 steps in French limestone are formed with solid blocks fitted with four 4.5m long dowels. The dowels are pulled into tension with hydraulic jacks making the entire flight act as one structural element.
Post tensioned stone elements can be significantly less deep over a given span than the concrete equivalent and are self-finished. This makes post tensioned stone a good alternative to clad stone structural elements, not just for staircases but for other building elements.
