Webb Yates were asked to design the cantilevering brackets and poles that support a large, stretch-fabric structure on a rooftop terrace of a bar in Shoreditch. The canopy was to be used for the summer period for events and general rooftop use. We had to design the supports to provide a steady point that the fabric could be attached to and stretched from to form the flowing shape of the canopy, while attached to existing brickwork without cantilevering too far or using excessive fixing points. We also did in-depth analysis on general stretch tents using form-finding and large deflection based finite element software in order to examine the effects of wind loads on the supports.
