Second Home London Fields is a former education building situated within the Mare Street Conservation area in East London which has been redeveloped into a creative community for Second Home.

The biophilic, co-working office space integrates a mix of futuristic working areas, private studios, a restaurant, nursery and roof-top garden and is protected from the elements by a striking double-skin ETFE façade.

The cloud-like structure that envelops the building acts as a double-skin ventilated façade, controlling the internal and external temperatures. The structure of the existing façade is retained and a new ETFE façade - a fluorine-based plastic - protrudes from the original structure and is designed for external wind pressure. The ETFE façade is combined with a glazed layer which regulates internal wind pressure.

Further works included the removal of masonry walls, creation of large new voids in the existing slabs for new openings between floors, and an extension of the existing roof terrace. Additional circular voids are architectural features, infilled with a structural glass floor.

The concept behind the Second Home’s dynamic office space is to integrate different creative industries and design productive work spaces which perfectly combine communal and private areas. The ambitious and innovative vision for Second Home Mare Street was realised through meticulous coordination and a good working relationship with the architect and client.

Working alongside the architect and client, Webb Yates Engineers provided the civil and structural designs for the redevelopment and transformed it into an exciting and alluring co-working space.
