Webb Yates Engineers provided structural engineering services for the refurbishment of an existing first floor Victorian flat, including a loft conversion and the structural design of a feature staircase.
The project was completed on a very tight budget with the intention to maximise the feeling of space and light. The existing ceiling was partially removed creating a double height space into which a low cost plywood staircase structure was inserted. The stair borrows heavily from a traditional cantilever stone staircase allowing minimal fixings into the supporting wall and keeping material and fabrication costs low. All structural members were formed in timber, plywood or LVL, avoiding the need for any structural steelwork.
